Petrol, electric power or a combination of both At low speeds, the hybrid system can be powered by the electric motor alone - using no petrol and producing zero emissions. When more power is required, for when you're overtaking or climbing a hill, the petrol engine and electric motor combine to provide seamless power. Hybrid Synergy Drive switches off the petrol engine when you're not moving, as well as capturing the energy when you brake or slow down. This energy, which would normally be wasted, is stored for emission-free electric driving or for an additional power boost later. The advanced aerodynamic performance helps the Hybrid Camry reduce both its fuel consumption and produce a whisper quiet cabin experience for driver and passengers. Atkinson Cycle Hybrid Camry's 2.4L VVT-i engine operates under a different cycle, known as Atkinson Cycle, which optimises fuel economy, even before we pair it with an electric motor. The petrol engine alone delivers 110kW of power at 6000rpm and 187Nm of torque at 4400rpm and is remarkably fuel efficient. The Atkinson Cycle process utilises a higher expansion ratio than a conventional petrol engine. By harnessing more of the energy produced getting the car moving, the engine delivers markedly improved fuel economy and lower emissions. Combined with direct ignition, twin-camshafts, a multi-valve cylinder head and Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i). Then pairing the engine to a highly efficient electric motor, you get a startling amount of power in the most fuel efficient car ever built in Australia. |
